GRP Roof Repairs in East London & Essex

Local repairs to glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) roofs, parapets and edge details, without replacing the whole roof where it is sound.

GRP (glass-reinforced polyester) roofs are durable, but they still crack, lift and wear where they meet walls, drains and foot traffic. When the damage is local, a targeted GRP repair can stop a leak without the cost of a full new roof. We check whether the laminate underneath is sound first, because a repair laid over damaged GRP only hides the problem.

We carry out GRP repairs on flat roofs, parapets and edge details across East London and Essex. Where the GRP is worn across the whole roof, we will say so plainly and talk through replacing it with a new system instead.

Cracks and splits in the laminate
Lifted edges and delaminated upstands
Worn or cracked resin topcoat
Damage around pipes, vents and drains
Repairs to GRP parapet and edge trims
Joint failures where separate sheets meet

What GRP is and where it fails

Glass-reinforced polyester is built up in layers: a resin base, layers of glass matting and a top coat that protects the laminate from ultraviolet light and weather. A well-laid GRP roof is light, seamless and long-lasting, which is why it is popular on garage roofs, rear extensions, bay roofs and parapets. Failure usually starts where the laminate is under stress. Thermal movement opens cracks at upstands and joints, foot traffic wears the top coat, and sunlight breaks down the resin over the years until the surface chalks or crazes.

Old GRP can also fail from underneath. If moisture has got into a timber deck, if the decking has moved, or if the original laminate was laid over a damp or dusty surface, a new patch will not hold. We check the deck beneath wherever we can, because a sound laminate on rotten timber is only a short-term fix.

How a GRP repair is carried out

A proper GRP repair starts with preparation. We remove loose and failed laminate, cut back to sound material and feather the edges of the damage, so the new layers bond across the whole area rather than just at the join. The surface is cleaned and kept dry, because moisture in the base prevents the resin from curing properly. Fresh matting is then laid into the resin in layers, each one worked to remove trapped air, and the repair is finished with a compatible top coat.

Weather is part of the job. Resin needs a dry surface and a temperature within the range the product is designed for. Repairs made in damp, cold or frosty conditions can look sound on the day and then lift or cure poorly. We plan GRP work around the weather for that reason, and we will tell you if a date needs to move. If your roof is a flat covering rather than a GRP one, our <InlineLink to="/services/flat-roof-repairs">flat roof repairs</InlineLink> page covers felt and liquid-applied systems.

Parapets, edges and drainage on GRP roofs

Many GRP roofs have parapets, edge trims and drip details that do most of the work of keeping water out. Failed parapet laminate and lifted edge trims are a frequent cause of leaks behind facades and at the wall junction. A repair here means reinstating the edge in GRP, fixing a secure trim where one is needed and checking that the outlet is clear and sits at the lowest point of the roof. Where the roof is ponding because the fall has gone, the repair has to correct the fall as well, or the water will return.

Joints, pipes and rooflight kerbs

Pipe penetrations, vents, rooflight kerbs and the joins between separate sheets are where a GRP roof moves most. Sealing them properly means cutting out the failed material, bonding fresh laminate and collar to the base and checking that the upstand is high enough to shed water. Rooflights and vent pipes are a common route for water, so we check these details first whenever a leak is reported.

GRP repairs on East London and Essex homes

GRP is common on the rear extensions and bay roofs of Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Hackney and Walthamstow, where an older roof was built up or replaced in the decades after the house was first built. In Essex, it is often found on 1930s semi-detached garage roofs and on flat sections of commercial units in Romford and Grays. Many of these roofs have been patched before, sometimes several times. We look at the whole roof, not only the damage that is leaking today. You can read more about our work in <InlineLink to="/locations/hackney">Hackney</InlineLink> and <InlineLink to="/locations/romford">Romford</InlineLink>.

When GRP should be replaced

If the laminate is worn through across the whole roof, if it has delaminated in large sections or if the deck has failed, a full replacement is usually better value than repeated patching. We will explain the options clearly, including a new GRP Cure It system where the roof suits it, and we will show you what each option involves before you decide.

Guarantees on GRP repairs

Repairs are carried out to written terms and come with the written guarantee that applies to that work. Our 25-year company guarantee applies to qualifying new roofs. Our 10-year insurance-backed guarantee applies only to qualifying new GRP Cure It installations, so it is not offered on repairs to an existing roof. Ask us for the written terms before work starts, so you know exactly what is covered and for how long.

Ask us about your GRP roof

Call or WhatsApp 07947 455000, or send the details through our contact page. Tell us where the leak shows and how old the roof is, and we will advise whether a repair or a new system makes more sense.
