Slate Roof Repairs in Hackney
Hackney's terraces around Stoke Newington, Clapton and Dalston were roofed in slate more than a century ago, and many still carry their original covering. KC Roofing & Scaffolding repairs slipped, cracked and missing slates with matching material, so the roofline still looks right from the street.
A slate roof rarely fails all at once. A nail rusts, a slate slips, and water finds the gap. The first sign is often a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling near the chimney, which is why we check the whole slope and the flashings around it, not only the slate above the stain. Replacing one broken slate is quick; finding out why it broke is what stops the next one going.
On older Hackney roofs the original fixings are usually iron nails that have corroded. We re-fix loose slates with copper or stainless nails and, where it is needed, add slate hooks on steep or exposed slopes. Where the underlay has perished, we discuss renewal before sealing the roof, because a patched slate on a wet underlay will only hold for so long.
Concrete slates, which were fitted to many Hackney roofs in the mid-20th century, behave differently. They are heavier, can turn brittle with age and often crack along the nail holes. We look at the condition of each sheet before recommending repair or replacement, and we say plainly when a patch is no longer sensible.
What a slate repair covers
Slipped and cracked slates
We remove the damaged slate without disturbing its neighbours, fit a matching replacement and nail it securely. Where an exact match is hard to find, we use the closest available slate and tell you before work starts.
Nail and fixing renewal
Corroded iron nails are the usual reason slates slip across a slope. We re-fix the slope to current practice and keep the finished courses straight.
Ridge, hip and eaves
Ridge and hip tiles can crack or work loose in strong wind. We check their bedding mortar and fixings along the run and re-bed or replace them where needed.
Full slope re-slating
When a slope has lost too many slates or the underlay has gone, re-slating that slope is often better value than repeated patching. The quote shows underlay, battens and lead as separate lines, so you can see what you are paying for.
Heritage and conservation in Hackney
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Some Hackney streets sit inside conservation areas, and a few houses are listed. In those cases the council's rules can govern slate type, colour and ridge detail, and sometimes whether consent is needed. We check the position for your property and confirm it with you before any work is planned.
Keeping the original look
Reclaimed and new slates differ in thickness and colour. We explain the options before work starts, so the roof keeps its character and the roofline isn't changed without discussion.

Slate Roof Repairs in Hackney — FAQs
How can I tell if my Hackney roof needs slate repairs or a full re-slate?
If only a handful of slates are cracked or slipped and the underlay is sound, a repair is usually the right answer. If slates are slipping across a whole slope, the nails have corroded widely, or the underlay is wet or perished, re-slating that slope is often more economical than repeated patching. We look at the roof from a ladder and from the ground before suggesting either.
My roof is covered in concrete slates. Can you repair them?
Often, yes. Individual cracked concrete slates can usually be replaced. Where the sheets are brittle across much of the roof, repairs can crack neighbouring slates during the work, and we will tell you that when we inspect it.
Do I need permission to repair slates on a house in a conservation area?
Like-for-like repairs often don't need planning permission, but it depends on the property. Before any work we look at its status and tell you whether the council's rules apply to your roof and materials.
Can you match slates on an older roof?
We will source the closest match we can and show you the options. Exact matches are not always available for older slates, so we explain any difference before work starts.
