Pitched Roofing in Hackney

From Victorian terraces to Edwardian semis and dormered loft conversions, most Hackney homes have a pitched roof. KC Roofing & Scaffolding looks after the whole covering together: tiles or slates, underlay, ventilation, ridges and valleys, so the roof works as one system rather than a patchwork of separate jobs.

A pitched roof is only as good as the layers hidden beneath the covering. Hackney houses often have underlay that has sagged, or none at all, and roof spaces with little ventilation. Condensation then builds up in winter and shows as damp, staining and cold bedrooms. Before we recommend new tiles or slates, we look at the roof space and the eaves to see what is happening underneath.

Loft conversions are common across Hackney, and they change the load and the water routes on a roof. Dormer cheeks, the valleys where a dormer meets the main slope, and the lead around them are the places we check most closely, because they carry more water than a plain slope does.

Pitched roofs also need attention after strong wind. Ridge tiles, hip tiles and the mortar that beds them move over time, and a loose ridge is often the first thing to fail in a gale. Checking them every few years costs far less than the damage a ridge can cause when it comes away.

Covering, underlay and ventilation

Tiles and slates

We repair and replace concrete and clay tiles and natural slates, matching profile and colour where we can.

Underlay and breathability

Where underlay has sagged or perished we discuss renewal. We also check ventilation at the eaves and ridge, so moisture can leave the roof space.

Eaves

Eaves are where debris and water collect. We clear, re-fix and repair the eaves so the first course of tiles or slates sits properly.

Ridges, valleys and dormers

Ridges and hips

Loose ridges are re-bedded or replaced, with the mortar and fixings checked along the whole run.

Valleys and dormers

Valleys and dormer junctions are where water concentrates. We re-line or re-dress them in lead or a code-correct alternative, and explain the choice before work starts.

Pitched Roofing in Hackney — FAQs

My loft is damp but the roof looks fine from the ground. What could cause this?

Condensation is a common cause, especially where there is little ventilation or the underlay has sagged. Looking at the roof space from inside is often the quickest way to tell condensation from a leak, and we check both before recommending work.

Do I need to replace all the tiles to fix one leak?

Not usually. Most leaks come from one area, such as a valley, a flashing or a cracked tile, and that can be repaired on its own. If the covering is failing across the roof, we will say so and show you the options.

Can you work on a Victorian terrace roof that has a loft conversion?

Yes. Loft conversions change how water runs across a roof, so we check dormer junctions and valleys carefully and explain anything we find before work begins.

Will I get a written quote?

Yes. Repair quotations are free, and the quote sets out the work and its price in writing before we start. Surveys and inspections are chargeable and quoted in advance.
