Bow — E3

Slate Roof Repairs in Bow

Bow's period houses were roofed in slate that has been doing its job for well over a century. KC Roofing & Scaffolding repairs slipped and cracked slates across E3 with matching material, and renews the nails and lead around them so the repair lasts.

Natural slate can last a very long time, but the fixings rarely do. Iron nails rust and snap, and a slate that loses its nail can slide, crack or be lifted by the wind. The slates that look worst are not always the ones causing leaks, and slates that have slipped out of line often cause more trouble, so we check the whole slope.

Bow terraces often share a roof line, so work on one house can affect its neighbours. We plan access and agree the work with you, and take care not to disturb the adjoining slopes or the party-wall detailing.

Lead is the other half of a slate roof. Valleys, hips, chimney flashings and dormer cheeks all depend on lead, and when those fail, a slate repair alone will not stop a leak. Where lead needs renewing, we include it in the same visit.

Typical slate repairs in Bow

Slipped slates

A slipped slate is re-fixed with new nails and, where needed, a slate hook. We keep the course straight so the rest of the slope stays tidy.

Cracked and broken slates

Broken slates are replaced with the closest match we can source. Where the original slates are no longer available, we explain the differences before work starts.

Ridges and hips

Ridge and hip tiles bedded in mortar can work loose. We re-bed them and check the fixings along the run.

Period detail, heritage and planning

Period detail

Lime mortar, traditional nail choices and original ridge detail matter on older Bow houses. We use materials that suit the age of the building, so the work doesn't trap damp in the walls.

Conservation and listed buildings

Some streets near Bow sit inside conservation areas, and a few properties are listed. In those cases the council may have views on materials and detail, so we confirm these with you before planning any work.

Slate Roof Repairs in Bow — FAQs

How long do natural slates last on a Bow house?

Natural slate can last a very long time when it is well fixed, but nails and lead often need attention much sooner. Regular checks catch fixing problems early, which is usually cheaper than waiting for slates to slip.

Can you match the old slates on my Bow terrace?

We'll source the closest match available and show you the options. Exact matches are not always possible for older slates, so we'll be clear about any difference before work begins.

Do I need to replace the whole roof if a few slates have slipped?

Usually not. A few slipped slates can be re-fixed on their own. If slipping is spread across the slope, or the nails have corroded widely, re-slating that slope is often the better value.

Will a slate repair stop a leak at my chimney?

Not always. Chimney leaks are often caused by lead flashing or pointing, so we check the chimney as part of the slate repair and recommend what is needed.
