Gutters and downpipes carry a great deal of water away from the roof. When they fail, the water runs into walls, fascias and brickwork instead. Most gutter faults are simple to fix once they are found: a leaking joint, a sagging bracket or a blocked outlet. Left alone, they can lead to rot in timber and damp in masonry.
We repair and replace gutters, downpipes and their brackets on pitched and flat roofs across East London and Essex. Where the fascia or soffit boards are soft, we will show you what is affected before anything is covered over.
How gutters and downpipes fail
Gutters rarely fail all at once. A joint starts to weep, a bracket pulls away from the fascia, a downpipe splits at the shoe, and the water begins to run down the wall instead of into the drain. Over time the damp can rot timber fascias and bargeboards, stain render and brickwork, and loosen the mortar in older walls. Most of these faults are inexpensive to fix when they are caught early, which is why a regular check is worth more than a rushed repair after the damage is done.
Gutter profiles and materials
Most homes we work on in East London and Essex have one of three gutter types. uPVC is the most common on homes built from the later twentieth century, usually in half-round or ogee profiles. Aluminium is light, holds its shape well and is often used on newer extensions. Cast iron appears on Victorian and Edwardian houses, and it is worth repairing rather than replacing where the original is sound, because a good cast iron run can last longer than many modern fittings. We match the profile and outlet size of the existing system, so new sections join cleanly and water flows properly.
Brackets, joints and outlets
Gutters are carried on fascia brackets or rafter brackets set at regular intervals. A sagging run usually means a bracket has failed or the gutter has been pulled out of line by leaves, ice or the weight of wet debris. We re-fix or replace brackets, reset the gutter to a slight fall towards the outlet so water runs to the downpipe, and check every joint. Running outlets, stopends and unions are the usual leak points, and the sealant or rubber gasket in each joint is the first thing we look at.
Downpipes, shoes and drainage
A downpipe that is blocked, split or disconnected from its shoe will send water down the wall, often straight onto the foundations. We check the downpipe fixings, swan necks, shoes and the connection into the drain at ground level. Where a downpipe discharges onto a patio or path, we check that the water is carried clear to a gully or drain rather than pooling against the house. Downpipes that are undersized for the roof they serve overflow in heavy rain, and we can advise on a larger section where it is needed.
Fascias, soffits and hidden damage
Overflowing water is the usual reason fascias, soffits and bargeboards go soft. Before we cover anything over, we test the timber by pressing with a screwdriver and checking for moisture and rot behind the gutter line. Soft timber is cut back and replaced, and we will show you what has been affected. Sound timber gets a fresh coat of paint or a protective finish. Leaving rotten fascia boards in place only lets the next gutter fail faster. If the damage runs into the roof itself, our <InlineLink to="/services/roof-repairs">roof repairs</InlineLink> team can look at the covering and the edges together.
Gutter repairs on East London and Essex homes
Cast iron runs are common on the Edwardian terraces of Walthamstow, Leyton and Tottenham, where the gutters sit behind decorative fascias and the joints have weathered over a century. Long uPVC runs on 1930s and later semi-detached homes across Essex tend to fail at the brackets and the outlets rather than the gutter itself. In both cases the work is usually local, and a few sections and brackets can restore a run that has been leaking for years. We carry out gutter work alongside our <InlineLink to="/services/gutters-fascias-soffits">gutter, fascia and soffit</InlineLink> service and our <InlineLink to="/locations/tottenham">Tottenham</InlineLink> work.
Maintenance that prevents repeat leaks
Clear gutters at least twice a year, especially in autumn when leaves collect at the outlets and in the angles of the roof. Check that downpipes are not blocked by moss or nesting material, and look for staining on the wall beneath each joint. If gutters overflow in heavy rain, the outlets or downpipes are almost certainly undersized or partly blocked, and that is worth checking before the damage spreads to the fascia.
